Building a Blues Vocabulary - BLUES WORKSHOP
Building a Blues Vocabulary
A Blues Clinic for All Musicians
Saturday November 1, 2008
2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
The Blues is part of our nation's history and has been exported all over the world. Its universal influence even appears in the foundations of Rock 'n Roll and Jazz. It speaks to us at our core because it is infused with emotion and passion; it can get us jumping to our feet and boogeying across the dance floor or it can bring us to tears as it reminds of heartache and remorse. Anyway you look at it the Blues is compelling and has enriched our lives for over a century.
Playing the Blues effectively requires building a sufficient vocabulary. Too often the Blues gets short shrift because of its reliance on the pentatonic scale. However, in this clinic we will demonstrate that the best players use an extension to the pentatonic scale that exploits additional notes picked out from the underlying chords as well as “blue notes” that do not exist in our traditional 12 note Western scale but can only be reached through note bending. In other words, good Blues playing requires an appreciation of subtlety, an ability to navigate the song structure, and an arsenal of techniques.
The goal of this clinic is to make listening, jamming, and transcribing more fulfilling for aspiring Blues musicians. Since the Blues is at the foundation of so many genres, aspiring rockers, jazzers, funk players, folk players, country players, and bluegrass players will benefit from attending. There will be a jam session with the instructor at the end so that students can try out some of their ideas and receive some coaching. The environment will be friendly, fun, and supportive.
In this 3 hour clinic musicians will learn
some Blues history
simple music-theory
techniques
the “Blues scale” (this scale is NOT the pentatonic scale, there's more to it!)
practice routines
phrasing
By the end of the clinic musicians will have the necessary foundation for building a Blues vocabulary that is melodic and soulful.
Prerequisites
This clinic is intended for beginner to intermediate players; it is not for absolute beginners. Generally speaking for this clinic to be worthwhile the musician should be able to (1) play the minor pentatonic scale and (2) play songs at moderate tempos.
Cost and Materials
The cost of this 3 hour clinic is $30.00.
Bring only your instrument and, if you need to plug in to an amplifier, a instrument cable. Course materials will be provided and books will be available for purchase

Ear Training Level1
This course is for students who are either beginners or who want to understand
more about music itself and how that understanding can be applied to
their voices or instruments. No prior knowledge of music is required. The
basic topics I will present are particularly useful for those who want to improvise
on their instruments. Basic musical concepts such as intervals (the
distance between two pitches) and simple versus compound rhythm are all
essential tools for the creative musician. I will also illustrate what I am presenting
with musical examples both recorded and live, so it will not be just a
lecture class. The whole class will participate with clapping in time, some
singing, and of course, all your questions.

introduced in Ear Training I, particularly rhythmic subdivisions and odd meters, will
be expanded upon in Ear Training II.

- The Fischer 3 (Joey, Izzy and Jesse) have been blessed
by their experience at Mojos. l their teachers are
reat mentors, both musically and inspirationally. In
Rock Camp over the summer you successfully showed
these young kids that they can create music together
in their own band. That has been the most amazing
experience any kid could have. We're lucky we found
you guys and grateful to have you in our lives. Rock
on! Xan Fischer Parent
Thanks for hosting the bass camp. It is the first real "masters class" that
I have attended. I learned more in the few hours I was there than I have
in all the other bass classes and workshops I've been to. I have my work
cut out for me and will be practicing a lot this winter.

see it's very much appreciated in the community." Michael Manring

"I walk away from every single voice lesson with a new technique I can apply
immediately. In a short time, Jessica has shown me how to express myself
with more authenticity, power, range of expression, and versatility than I ever thought possible." Adrienne Osborn The FEVER
I had a wonderful time at Mojo's. It felt more like a musical family
gathering than "clinic". Very supportive and comfortable environment
with a wealth of information being passed around. Can't wait to go
back! Damian Erskine MHBC #2

It gives me the environment I need to enjoy making music. and of course the staff is top notch. couldnt be better.Ben Baron Student
Studying bass with you has been amazing for Tara. She's learned so much on her instrument plus she reads music now, hooray. Also all the cool people you have come through for clinics like Alice Peacock, Ray Reindeau and Damian and of course Michael Manring...
plus I love doing voice with Jessica with my "girls acoustic trio". And you and Jessica are such wonderful people! Mojo's has really enriched
our family musically and beyond. You'll be seeing lots of us again this coming year.
